Tail of the Month

At 12 years old, Sunny should have been spending her days as most senior cats prefer, curled up in a favorite spot or getting pets from her human.

Unfortunately, on May 1st, Sunny ended up at Peoria Animal Protection Services (PCAPS) after being surrendered by her owner due to no fault of her own.

Like many older pets who enter the shelter system, Sunny suddenly found herself in an unfamiliar environment at a stage of life when stability matters most, but losing her home was not the only challenge she was facing.

During her evaluation, staff discovered that Sunny was dealing with painful dental issues. One of her canine teeth had become loose and was causing significant discomfort. Eating had become difficult, and the pain was beginning to affect her behavior. What may have looked like irritability was likely a cat trying to cope with a problem she could not explain.

Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen in older pets, yet it often goes unnoticed until the pain becomes impossible to ignore. For animals entering shelters, those medical needs can create additional barriers to adoption if they are not addressed quickly.

That is where the Peoria Humane Society steps in.

Through our Shelter Rehab Program, PHS helps provide medical care for animals at PCAPS whose needs extend beyond routine shelter services. For Sunny, that meant receiving the dental treatment she desperately needed.

Veterinary staff determined that four teeth needed to be extracted, including the loose canine tooth that had been causing her discomfor. The procedure relieved the source of her pain and gave her the opportunity to heal before beginning the next chapter of her life.

Today, Sunny is eating normally again. The discomfort that once made everyday activities difficult is gone. Shelter staff report that she is acting like herself again, no longer struggling with the pain that had been affecting her quality of life.

Her story is a reminder that many animals entering shelters need more than food, water, and a safe place to stay. They need medical care and someone willing to invest in their future.

For senior pets especially, that support can make all the difference. When an older animal loses the only home they have known, time becomes even more important. Addressing medical concerns quickly not only improves their quality of life, it also helps them move forward toward adoption without preventable obstacles standing in their way.

Every dental procedure, medication, diagnostic exam, and recovery plan funded throught the Shelter Rehab Program is made possible by people who choose to support the Peoria Humane Society. Because of that support, Sunny is no longer living with dental pain and has a chance to find a new family.

Sunny is still waiting for her forever home. Until that day comes, she has something every animal deserves. Comfort, care, and a second chance.
