Shelter Support Program

Every year, more than 6,000 animals arrive at Peoria County Animal Protection Services (PCAPS) in need of care and a second chance.

While Peoria Humane Society does not operate the shelter, we support the animals there through medical care, volunteer programs, adoption outreach, and essential supplies that help them stay healthy and comfortable while they wait for a new home.

How We Support Shelter Animals

Peoria Humane Society partners closely with Peoria County Animal Protection Services (PCAPS) to provide resources and support that help animals receive the care they need while waiting for adoption, rescue placement, or reunification with their families.

Funding Medical Care

Many animals arrive at the shelter with medical conditions that require treatment beyond routine care. Peoria Humane Society helps cover the cost of veterinary services, medications, surgeries, and rehabilitation for sick, injured, abused, or neglected animals. This support gives animals the opportunity to heal and improves their chances of finding permanent homes.

Recruiting and Training Volunteers

Volunteers provide valuable assistance to shelter staff while helping improve the daily lives of shelter animals. Peoria Humane Society recruits and trains volunteers who help socialize animals, provide enrichment, assist with events, and support shelter operations.

Supporting Rescue and Adoption Efforts

PCAPS works with rescue organizations, foster-based groups, and shelters throughout the region to place as many animals as possible. Peoria Humane Society helps prepare animals for these opportunities by funding necessary veterinary care and supporting outreach efforts that connect animals with adopters and rescue partners.

Providing Supplies and Resources

Through fundraisers, donation drives, and community partnerships, Peoria Humane Society helps provide food, treats, toys, bedding, and other essential supplies that make shelter stays more comfortable for animals. These efforts help ensure that shelter staff have the resources needed to care for thousands of animals each year.

Low Tide’s Success Story

Low Tide arrived at Peoria County Animal Protection Services as a stray with chronic ear infections, dental disease, and a chipped tooth. Her medical needs required care beyond routine shelter resources. Through the Peoria Humane Society’s Shelter Rehab Program, she received a dental procedure that included the removal of four damaged teeth, along with medication to treat her ongoing ear infections.

During her recovery, Low Tide was placed in a foster home where she could relax away from the stress of the shelter. Today, she is healthy, comfortable, and found her forever home. Her story shows how donor-supported medical care can improve an animal’s quality of life and help remove barriers to adoption.

Shelter Wish List

Many of the items used every day at the shelter come directly from generous community members. Donations help provide comfort, enrichment, and care for animals while they wait for adoption.

You can also purchase items directly through the PCAPS Amazon Wish List and have them shipped straight to the shelter.

Donations may be dropped off at PCAPS during normal business hours.
