Melvin is a young pig with a personality that is hard not to love. He is friendly, enjoys being around people, and is always happy when a snack is involved. He arrived at Peoria County Animal Protection Services as one of 64 animals taken in from a single property. With so many animals needing care at once, PCAPS had a tremendous amount of work ahead of them to make sure each animal received the attention and medical care they needed.
Before Melvin could find his forever home, he needed a little extra veterinary care. He needed to be neutered and have his tusks trimmed so he could be ready for adoption.
Neutering is especially important for pigs because it can help reduce hormone-driven aggression and limit challenging behaviors from developing as they mature. Taking care of this early gives pigs like Melvin a better chance of adjusting to life in a home and helps set them up for a happier, safer future with their families.
This is where the Peoria Humane Society was able to help.
PHS covered the cost of Melvin’s surgery and tusk trimming, giving him the medical care he needed to move forward.
Melvin’s story also gives us a chance to highlight something that is important to us at PHS. Helping cats and dogs makes up much of the work we do, but our mission does not stop there. We believe every animal deserves a chance at a healthy and happy life. When animals like Melvin need help, we want to be there for them too.
Melvin now has his second chance.
He has been adopted and will be heading to his forever home this week. We can only imagine what his new life will look like, but we have a feeling there will be plenty of naps, lots of pets, and some of his favorite snack, Culver’s cheese curds.
Melvin’s story is one example of what your support makes possible. When animals come into the shelter needing extra medical care PHS is there to make sure those needs are met.
There are always more animals that need a helping hand. Your donations allow us to step in when an animal needs surgery, veterinary care, or other support that might otherwise stand between them and a happy ending.
Because of you, Melvin gets to leave the shelter behind and start the life he deserves. Thank you for helping make stories like his possible.
